  1. aCAIR denotes for “crude annual incidence rate,” which means the annual number of ECMO cases per million people registered in National Health Insurance in the year.
  2. 1. “Case” in World is equal to the total cases in the world minus the total cases in Taiwan.
  3. 2. The estimate of Taiwan population for each year was obtained by using the total number of people registered in National Health Insurance on July 1 in the year.
  4. 3. The estimate of World population for each year in this study was equal to the total number of the world population minus the total population in the least developed countries as shown in “World Population Prospects: the 2010 Revision”, and also minus the total of Taiwan population.
